Just half-way through the month-long Hoosiers Fighting Hunger statewide food drive benefiting Indiana food banks, U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar announced that Kroger, Marsh and Walmart have collected more than 135,000 pounds of food.
“September is National Hunger Action Month and Hoosiers are answering the call. In just 15 days we collected more than 135,000 pounds of food for Indiana food banks,” Lugar said. “With food banks experiencing more than 30 percent increased demand over last year, these donations will help stock the shelves and feed our neighbors.”
Hoosiers can continue to donate at Kroger, Marsh and Walmart stores across the state through September 30. Stores have pre-bagged donations of $3, $5 and $10.
Lugar visited Kroger and Walmart on September 11 and visited Marsh on September 21 to encourage donations and thank the grocery companies for their unprecedented participation.
Lugar has long supported hunger issues, such as incentives to promote charitable food donation, elimination of childhood hunger, foreign food aid, and health promotion.
