Hunger in America 2010: Indiana State Report indicated that 63% of our food insecure client households have a senior.
Food Insecurity Among Older Adults, a recent report from the AARP Foundation, indicated that 13.55% of low-income Hoosiers 60+ are at risk of hunger. For 50-59 year olds at the same income level, the food insecurity number nearly triples to 33.29%.
Programs addressing senior hunger are utilized around the state, some of which are provided by our member food banks. Our members provide meals through congregate meal programs, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, food box distribution, and senior mobile pantries. Programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, and federal health and medical care programs also provide food assistance to seniors. Yet research continues to show low participation in SNAP by Hoosier seniors, with room for growth in other senior-targeted programs.
